Until the late eleventh century, Aghmat, which was at the crossroadsof two great dynasties Almohads and Almoravids, was a hotbed of Sufism. If its spiritual influence has persisted until today, it is
thanks to the presence, over centuries, of great saints and Sufi masters.
Aghmat has been in since a slow and irreversible decline since the advent of Marrakech . However, recent archaeological discoveries have highlighted Aghmat’s great historical value, and studies that have accompanied the discovery found the existence of an exceptional site that reflects the importance of medieval Islamic architecture.
So to revive Aghmat's fortunes and the history of this exceptional site, large projects are under consideration: the rehabilitation and preservation of the mausoleums by scientists and scholars of Aghmat, further archaeological excavations, research and the enhancement of historical monuments which have been discovered, and the upgrade of the city centre in order to accommodate tourists and cultural events.
Other projects are also programmed: city development, creating a public space, construction of a new souk and the building of a mall, including a craft house which should contribute to creating local products, and a museum that will house various updates during searches.
Thanks to the National Institute of Science Archaeology and the American University of Vanderbilt, Aghmat, a small town about twenty miles from Marrakech, will be reborn from its ashes, andt will be restored to highlight its historical memory.
Aghmat is preparing to become a new tourist destination for lovers of history and culture.
