Exhibition: " Fez Trilogy 1916-1917," the beauty of Fez in historical photographs

The Gallery of the French Institute in Fez is holding 23 September - 3 October, an exhibition that reflects the beauty of the spiritual capital of the kingdom Fez, a historical record called "Fez Triology 1916-1917."



Exhibition: " Fez Trilogy 1916-1917," the beauty of Fez in historical photographs


 These are the albums of photographs taken by Commander Larribe, entitled "Morocco picturesque", published in three volumes by George Bertrand in Paris in 1915.

In fact, the exhibition presents the second album of photographs made in Fes. The first included 62 photographs of Fez and Meknes 10. This second album is a collection of 120 rare and precious. Published in 1917 it was acquired by the House of Photography in 2010.

 
"I found such a charm to live in Fez for about thirty months (March 1914-August 1916), such an interest in my studies Muslim, such a curiosity to follow a more or less the initial contact with our administration this population of 100 to 120,000 souls, so confident friendly in all environments, especially among the ulema and Tolba, with whom I work constantly, and among the artisans, who have always provided with a perfect good grace, the elements of my personal documentation of their techniques, I know, once again, and always with pleasure, the opportunity to talk about this city and its inhabitants. "

So wrote Alfred Bel in his preface introducing the commander Larribe Albums. "If we try to analyze the views of this album and to form groups by categories, there are a fair number of topics of great interest for the knowledge of this amazing city: views and overviews of the city and immediate vicinity, military architecture, largely represented by the walls and gates, buildings and various kasbahs, religious architecture, mosques, madrasas, shrines, domestic architecture of the sultans and individuals with sumptuous palaces and houses, ceremonies public demonstrations, procession of the Sultan, the MCALL public prayer, procession of Aissaoua, party of the Sultan of Tolba, the street life and markets, the souks, the shops of merchants ... "explained Alfred Bel.


 
The exhibition organized jointly with the House of Photography shows snapshots presented to the public in their original blue paper and with explanatory cartels as drafted originally by the author. The exhibition also presents some anonymous photographs, as a variation on this theme, and presented in large format.

It is a testament to the history of the city of Fez in pictures sensual fragrant of all the charm of this city that preserves its beauty over the centuries.
