Inauguration in Marrakech for the first eye bank in MoroccoAn eye bank, the first of its kind in Morocco, opened Monday in Marrakech, at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Mohammed VI, for a total investment of 6.5 million dirhams of which, 2.5 million spent on dhs the equipment.
Installed in a total area of about 200 m2, the new structure includes a receiving unit, another storage, a laboratory, a processing unit of corneas, a unit of packaging and shipping, in addition to administrative offices.
The eye bank with the inauguration takes place as part of the celebration of World Day for Organ Donation, is to contribute to strengthening the autonomy of the Kingdom in the field of medical care, restoring sight to patients suffering from incurable diseases of the cornea, and participate in the development of research in ophthalmology. It also sets objectives to develop expertise in the collection, preservation and distribution of cornea, to raise awareness on the importance of donating corneas to ensure self-sufficiency in transplants at the regional and / or national and if necessary, arrange the import of plugins from other European countries and this, in the context of perfect compliance with the regulations. In a statement to MAP, Mohamed Harif, Director of the CHU Mohammed VI noted that this project adds value in particular since it is the first eye bank at the national level, noting that with the establishment of this bank, it is now possible to transplant samples, according to internationally recognized criteria. Dr Mohamed Said Belkadi, Manager of Professional Affairs at the same hospital said that the inauguration of this entity coincides with the program to the national registry of 1,000 corneas each year in different HOSPITALS academic skills to support this type of operation, forming the wish to see the culture of organ donation more popularized in society. "Our goal this year in the University Hospital of Marrakech, is how to achieve 100 cornea transplants, knowing that at present some 95 corneal transplants were performed successfully," he said Parallel to this event, a collective registration in the register of organ and tissue took place before the court of first instance of Marrakech, by many physicians and administrators CHU Mohammed VI.
