Yacout Info: What is new for this 46th edition FNAP?
Karim El Achak: There is a new office this year and there are important changes because the board of directors have always concentrated on the evolution of the festival as it is about our patrimony and heritage and it is a very prestigious occasion. I have an office which is staffed by experts who have
volunteered their services and at the same time we have a full time staff , a director Mohamed Nait M’Barek and our artistic director, Brahim El Mazned and a management with real cultural expertise.
What’s new this year? It is true that your question is pertinent because each year we must create something new but also remain true to the main aim of FNAP which is the preservation of our heritage and patrimony.
It is a delicate balance which we have to achieve to preserve a very rich patrimony with numerous artists and we have to present all the skills of these national artists. Marrakech has the privilege of giving expression to the vision of King Mohammed V who was a visionary who wanted to create a vision of Morocco in its diversity and plurality once a year.
We have decided to ensure that in this edition of FNAP we concentrate on welcoming both our national
and international audience who love our country. We must be more attentive to this aspect of our
tourism we have to research our events so that they are more authentic. This is an international meeting place. Globalisation has changed our perspective an this festival is also an expression of the global patrimony and we should ask Unesco to inscribe this event in the global patrimony as well because it deserves to be there. We are working on this but it waits a final decision.
The most important new development for the 46th festival is the creation of a village for the artisans and musicians. The Badii Palace hosts the magnificent spectacle but we needed another location for welcoming as many people as possible in the evening , with the creation of the village we will create a parallel identity with the Badii Palace spectacle in a progressive way . The village will open at 1700 hours in the afternoon to welcome the children and families for an educational evening and to meet the artists in the village.
Q: What will be on show at the village?
A: One is talking about the Festival of Popular Arts and how it is presented across all the Arts because
the Arts are part of our experience of our daily life. The village will be a new way to reflect on our culturein future festivals . This year we have a theme focusing on musical instruments and interesting facts relating to the artisans.
Q: Where is the village situated?
A: At a location which is already very popular with Marrakechi’s at the Ghabat Chabab , the garden
of the Olive Grove, like the Menara and the Mamounia gardens. It is located on the Mohammed VI
where there is an island on the boulevard of 7 hectares.
Q: Is it possible for international visitors to have some form translation so that they can follow the
performances in local dialect?
A: It is a concern we have started with a document explaining the performances at the Badi palace
spectacle there will be a catalogue this year which will describe the performing troupes and where they
come from and next year we will organise a press trip to cover the heritage at its source and to explain
everything as clearly as possible before the festival begins. The importance of the preservation of our
heritage is such that we must reflect this at its origin in the different regions. Thus we are working on
documentation and communications to reflect our unique heritage.
Q: How can the FNAP reconcile its portrayal of the national heritage with the need to attract
international tourism?
A: Marrakech has always had an international awareness and Morocco has always been a cultural
crossroads involving many different languages and cultures. Marrakech is a developing and growing
a city with all the opportunities and challenges that entails for Moroccans. The need to increase c
and develop communications is not solely a question of how we live with our foreign friends but also
how we manage our young generation who need to understand their culture and their roots. We look
forward to the 50th edition of the festival in four years time to create something really important in
terms of the communication of our culture and heritage both nationally and internationally.
It will be a real global rendezvous for Marrakech. The Moroccan heritage with all its assets
Has much to give to the world.
Q: What is the importance of the FNAP Parade?
A: This annual parade displays all the regional costumes and expresses their pride in their culture and
local traditions .It is part of our living heritage and identity.
Q: Will you have performances in different locations as in previous editions of FNAP?
A: The great change of the 46th edition of FNAP is the centrality. To witness all the events in their
entirety it is not possible to have performances in all the different locations in Marrakech. It is
important for us that everyone experiences the music and performances together in this central location.
It is important to have the maximum audience participation in a sustainable way.
We are working on a calendar of events for next year for Marrakech and its region including Essaouira
so that all regional heritage events can have the same exposure to an international and national
audience.
