Ryanair , the Irish low cost carrier has doubled its Moroccan flights with 123 weekly flights. It has becomethe leading global airline in terms of passenger numbers which will grow to 66 million in 2010, more than Air France KLM. Ryanair mainly targets european tourists flying to Agadir and Marrakech.
The British Easyjet has 89 flights , an increase of 25% in a year. The Moroccan carrier Jet4you is performing strongly with 86 flights, an increase of 62% operating from 8 airports in the Kingdom. Finally the United Arab Emirates airline Air Arabia has experienced a 13% growth in traffic. It was launched in 2009 uses Casablanca airport as a hub and has had substantial success in attracting Moroccans living abroad as passengers.
These companies have profited from liberalisation measures the Open Skies agreement with the EU signed in 2006 which greatly simplified the opening of new airoutes between Morocco and Europe. Hamid Zhar director of air transport said that In 2004 there were 22 airlines in the country and now there are 44 today , of which 18 are low cost. This helps tourism and Moroccans living abroad returning to their country.
Royal Air Maroc 5RAM° has suffered from the low cost phenomenum but has succeeded in adapting its prices and preserving its share of 50% of the market. It also moved into the low coast market when it created Atlas Blue. However this inititiative encountered problems because of heterogeneous fleet of different aircraft which did not match requirements and an obsolete reservations system which never achieved the anticpated breakthrough in passenger numbers. Royal Air Maroc has not however renounced its aims in the low cost market and on the 8th July it announced its intention to acquire 66% of Jet4you, owned by the German tour operator since 2008.
