Miriem Bensalah Chaqroun was elected, on Wednesday in Casablanca, president of General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) to become the first woman at the head of the Moroccan employers’ organization.

Bensalah got 96.8% of the votes for a three-year mandate (June 2012 to May 2015), renewable once.

On this occasion, Bensalah Chaqroun, who stood as sole candidate to succeed Mohammed Hourani as CGEM chief, committed to make of the organization “a real player in the design and implementation of the country’s economic policies of development.”

“We want to involve the CGEM in the development, running and implementation of sectoral programs such as the National Pact for Industrial Emergence (PNEI), to strengthen our industry that we have, unfortunately, too long neglected,” she said.

Bensalah stressed the need to be an active element of economic regionalization, boosting competitiveness, improving taxation and forming human capital.

The CGEM should be more open to SMEs and promote synergies between them and large groups, she said.
