Morocco and Europe agree to Foster Cooperation on Human Rights
Morocco’s inter-ministerial delegation for human rights and the Council of Europe decided, on Wednesday in Rabat, to focus their cooperation on aspects related to building capacities of institutions and civil society stakeholders in human rights.

Moroccan inter-ministerial delegate for human rights, Mahjoub El Haiba, and Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, also agreed to endeavor to bring national legal framework of human rights into line with that of the Council of Europe, the Delegation said in a statement.

It added that an action plan covering areas of bilateral cooperation over the period 2012-2014, being finalized, will be approved by both institutions in the near future.

El Haiba gave an overview of the reforms undertaken by Morocco to promote and protect human rights, especially the new constitutional and institutional framework adopted recently by the Kingdom.

The Moroccan official commended the Council’s support for Morocco, which was crowned by granting the Kingdom the status of “Partner for Democracy”.

For his part, Jagland congratulated Morocco for the reforms it has initiated, which, he said, stem from the Kingdom’s political will. He also expressed the Council’s commitment to supporting these reforms.
