Morocco’s democratic choices strategic, irreversible -official
Morocco’s democratic choices are strategic and irreversible, Mahjoub El Haiba, Interministerial Delegate for Human Rights said, Wednesday in Geneva, during the examining of the Kingdom’s report under the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which was unanimously adopted by the 21st Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In his address, El Haiba underlined that the recommendations accepted by the Kingdom during the examining of the report by the Working Group last May consolidate the Kingdom’s democratic choices, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, and fall within the scope of the reform process and the structural projects in the areas of democracy-building, human rights and human development.

Some of those recommendations have been implemented or under implementation, he said, reiterating Morocco’s commitment to submitting, within two years, a mid-term report on follow-up to all the recommendations.

El Haiba said the government is already endeavoring to bring about all conditions conducive to following up the recommendations as part of an inclusive approach with all stakeholders.

He also highlighted Morocco’s efforts to combat vulnerability and enhance social support, in particular through the generalization of compulsory health insurance, access to drinking water and electricity in rural areas and the promotion of women’s rights.
