The WTM attracts about 6,000 exhitbitors from almost every country in the world , 190 countries in all including the public and private sectors.
Simon Beck acknowdeged the transport problems which occured last year in getting exhibitors and visitors to Excel and assured us that a steering committee had been formed including London's Mayor, Boris Johnston, Transport for London and Excel to ensure structured and adequate back up transport facilities in the unlikely event of problems. He acknowledged that they were unprepared for lat years problems and the Transport Minister had apologized to the Ministers at the meeting at WTM for the shortcomings in 2008.
Invitations have been sent out for the Ministers' meeting at WTM 2009 and it will be an ideal opportunity for Minister to discuss relevant isues and tourism trend ands and an excellent networking opportunity.They are working very closley with the UNWTO and it will be held on Tuesday 10th November.
This was Reed's first visit to Morocco and the aim was to support the private sector . Morocco has a long history of attending WTM and it was important for Reed to make the effort to support the Tourist Board(ONMT) and the CRT , tourism operators and hoteliers The objective was to explain what was new at WTM and to explain how Reed can help the private sector to ensure that they get the most out of WTM. It was an exhibitor training session ensuring that the right right visitors are attracted to the Moroccan stand for WTM 2009.
This was the first time that Reed had made a trip to Morocco, which had been discussed for sometime so that they could provide an additional support service to exhibitors Internet contact is no substitute for face to face meetings to answer questions. With the worldwide downturn it was all the more important to provide this kind of strategic support service. Morocco, like many tourist boards has experienced continued growth and now that 2009 looks challenging for us all this type of support is all the more important.
The WTM has a very strong focus on aviation and the challenges faced by airlines and therewill be a number of leading travel experts focusing on specific areas of aviation topics such as carbon offsets worldwide. despite the problems Marrakech continues to do well and remain very popular with British tourist sas it prorvides a much richer culturally diverse environment with the whole Marrakech Tensfit Haouz region adding to this. The low cost carriers Easyjet, Ryannair ad Atlas Blue have made it much more cost effective to travelto Marrakech from the UK. The challeng enow is to open up other tourism locations in Morocco.
WTM has a very structured plan for travel agents on the Thursday, last day for the World Travel Market which is very destination focused , letting them decide what they want in terms of product information for each destination.
Morocco has a 200 meter stand with about 25 companies on that stand , Tunisia is very similar, Egypt and Turkey have very substantial stands. What is most important is how exhibitors and attendees use international shows to their advantage in a competitive advantage to attract new business be it a country stand, hotelier or tourist boards and tour operators.
WTO has been supporting responsible tourism for a longtime -15vyears and this coincides with Morocco's policy in this respect. three years ago we launched this on an international level and discussed best practice worldwide and to coordinate all the work that is being done internationally.
There are strong commercial and environmental reasons why countries like Morocco should support responsible tourism, it is not only a matter of doing good. The program for WTM 2009 is now looking extremely good .Water is also a very important part of this and WTO has for some years work on water conservation with it 'Just a drop' program which help dig wells and provide clean water in under developed countries.
As well as being the largest exhibition company in the world Reed works on major travel exhibitions worldwide focusing on sectors such as luxury travel and golf. WTM is their largest event. Simon sees tourism in the Middle East maintaining the momentum which was identified in WTM 2008 and outstripping any other area in the world. The growth potential is outstanding in terms of international tourism.
No one can tell whe the current downturn will end however the travel industry is very resilient . The internet is now becoming increasingly important in booking flights and hotels directly. This is good for the consumer a it is more cost effective and gives the consumer control.
