Marrakech , the red city has always been a cultural crossroads influenced by the Sahara , the cities of the north and the contrast between the Mountain and the Plain . The National Festival of Popular Arts is a homage to ancient traditions and the cultural heritage which are part of the great city of Marrakech.
This year's Festival is being launched with the theme " the age of the seasons" with the traditional emphasis on the different stages of life. Birth and puberty, love and marriage, spiritual quests or rights of initiation revealed in the music, chants and dances of the different performances. It is with inspiration that Abdssamad Dinia the choreographer has worked with 21 traditional Moroccan troupes who will be performing each evening at the magnificent and historic Badii Palace .
The other strong element of the 45th FNAP is "the colours of the Aita" which all the musical tones and themes of the genre . Its origins are rural and the style of this music celebrates the joie de vivre and the love of imagery and metaphorical expressions.

The Foundation of Festivals of Marrakech has selected 3 new sites for the folklore spectacle in addition to the Badii Palace and the Royal Theatre. These are Bab Ighli, Akioud and the Harti Square.
The spectacles at these three locations are the classical Moroccan songs with orchestra with names such as Abd el hadi Belkheyat and Latefa Raafat. The Chaabi, a very popular genre iis represented by the masters Sati, Senhaji and also Fatima Tihihit. The new styles of fusion and a new generation of singers who have becomevery popular throughout the country in the last few years. There are many of these new generation groups such as Mazagan, Casa Crew, and Ribab Fusion.

16 July :The grand parade of 500 traditional artistes on the Boulevard Mohamed V.
17 July: The official opening of the Festival at the Badii Palace at 22.00 hours with a grand show comprising 21 traditonal troupes of performers. The spectacle will be enacted at the sametime each evening.
20-24 July at 22.00 hours Bab Ighli will welcome each evening the following artistes: Abdelhadi Belkayat, Latéfa Rafaat, Senhaji, Stati, Fatima Tihihit, Hamid Bouchnak, nouri, Mazagan, Casa Crew and Ribab Fusion.
From 18 to 22 July at 22.00 hours : Akioud features the the orchestras Tahour, Hadj Abdelmoghit, Ghninou, Tagada , Al Bidaoui, Cheb Amine Jad, Amayou, Basma and Fiegta.
From 18 to 22 July at 22.00 hours Several pop groups will be forming in the El Hart square, including Mwansa, Tiraline, Mayara Band, Chouf T Chouf, Ach7ele, Shabaka, Gnaoua Stone, Zazz Band and Style Souss.
From 17 t0 19 July at 22.00 hours: At the Royal Theatre the best aita groups, Hadda Ouaakki, Mohamed Laarousi, Oulad Benaaguida, Khadija Al Bidaouia, Oulad El Khabcha, Satsa and Abderazak Lakhrigui.
This festival highlights Morocco's cultural diversity. Each region has its specific traditons of expressions and song which are choreographed with regional rhythms and poetry, costumes, ornaments and instruments.
This fusion of rhythms and styles will be revealed by the young generation who will demonstrate the richness and creativity of Moroccan culture which is the essence of the spirit of the National Festival of Popular Arts.
For its 45th anniversary the Festival has created a diversified artistic programme which reflects the richness of the Kingdom's rich musical heritage, dancing,traditional arts and chaabi, song, amazight art, aita and the new generation pop art.
Sublime voices from the four regions of the Kingdom testify to the amazing cultual diversity of the North East and the centre of Morocco including:
Menghouchi: a dance with accelerated cadences with a preponderance of martial arts. The gun and powder recall the role played the the region in the Kingdom's history.
Aisawa : A genre of religious music charaterised by collective chants.
Abidat’Rma : art inspired by hunting rituals expressed in song and dance.
Ait Hdidou : dances and songs which evoque the fiancés of Imlchil which according to legend filled the nearby lakes of Isli and Tislit with their tears. The danceof the Ahidous is also fascinating.
Hassada : This dance symbolises the end of the harvest and the joy of the earth and its abundance.
Haiti : a dance eleborated by the Ahidous of the Middle Atlas, with a moving and sustained rhythm.The Bendir games are part of the choreography.
Souss et Grand Sud
Rokba : The rhythm and cadence join with a collective dance .
Guedra : A mysterious dance veiled in a rhythm of drums with a mysterious language of its own
Ahouach Tissint : A dance representing the rites of marriage . The man dances with a dagger circling the young girl and finishes slowly sinking on his knees..
Houara : The dancing movements are very beautiful with the poetry of the songs ahich are the voice of the mountain.
Ahouach Ouarzazate : The women's voices respond to the men's with poetry and an undulating dance.
Tazouite : The dance of the bee from a region well reputed for its roses..
The Middle and Grand Atlas
Ahouach Imintanout : A community dance for young people seeking their fortune.
Ahidous : The short and assemetric phrases their passages of a chorus and hypnotic rhythm. The bodies are liberated from tehconstraints of line and sight.
Ait Boughmaz : This dance is guided by the unique double flute. It evokes the news of the tribe in the same way as the old troubadours, which is the prelude to love stories and marraige.
Marrakech et Al Haouz
Dekka : The drums quicken and its voice is matched by a powerful choir.
Gnaoua : Originally from Africa this dance is part of the group's music. The musical instruments keep their ancientand primitive heitage.
Oulad Sidi Hmad Oumoussa : these are the acrobats which refer to the travelling fraternity of Sidi Ahmed Ou Moussa composed of archers et sharpshooters.
Taskiouine : Dance of the warriors fierce powerful and virile.
Tkitikat : Troubadours and singers (purely Marrakechi)
Ghiyata : Traditional music accompanying a marriage (Khamssa OuKhamssine).
