Today the former foundouks are mostly used as workshops by craftsmen or have taken on a new life selling colourful artifacts . Houses near Jemaa el Fna have been transformed into small hotels where bedrooms replace the old caravanserai for traders that leave their vehicles outside.
Former foubdouks are mostly located along the main streets, in a ring around the souks. It is also near the gates of the city, near Bab Khemis (13) and bab Doukala (10) and in the district of the Kasbah (14).
The richest is in Mouassine and Sidi Abdelaziz, and behind the Mederassa Ben Youssef, along a street, which in popular tradition took the name of bin fnadak (between foundouks). These foundouks were used for long’term trade and commerce. The poorest foundouks are found near gates and temporary souks, which were used for short-term commerce and for agricultural products in the region. The foundouks are privately owned.
