Entitled “Marrakech hosts the world” the second edition of the MTM held under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI brought together 265 exhibitors from 22 countries and despite rainy conditions, the enthusiasm generated in the new exhibition centre was palpable. The Second edition of the Moroccan Travel Market in Marrakech 15-18 January 2009.
Major hotel groups such as Accor, American Hotels International, Atlas Hospitality, Best Western, Golden Tulip, the Kenzi Group, the Ibis Mousaffir Group, and Le Méridien gave the Market a strong international flavor. The ONMT stand was the impressive entrance to the exhibition hall. It was good to see Mr. Ali El Kasmi General Manager of ONMT London visiting the show. He felt that 2009 would be a very difficult year but Morocco’s tourism was diversified and internationally popular and would weather the storm. Royal Air Maroc also had an impressive stand and the previous president of RAM, Mr. Mohamed Berrada visited the show followed next day by the President, Mr. Driss Benhima.

The CRT of Marrakech with  the newly elected President Mr. Hamid  Bentahar as well as the CRT’s of Meknes, Agadir, Casablanca, Doukkala Abda, Fes and Rabat and Tangier were all present with their stands as were the CPT’s of Essaouira, Ouarzazate, Tiznit and Zagora.

The Malaysian Tourism stand attracted great interest and the Mauritanian stand emphasized the advantages of joint holidays in Morocco and Mauritania and Mohamed Salem Bontemps General Manager of Tourism Complex Etoile du Sud at Nouakchott emphasized the variety of desert experiences in Mauritania as well as ancient cities such as Chenguetti and Adraar and the wonderful natural park which hosts one of the greatest gatherings of wild birds in the world and dolphins swimming in the river sometimes herding the fish towards the fishermen.

The Xaluca Group has four hotel complexes, Kasbah Hotel Xaluca, Kasbah Hotel Timbuktu, Belle Etoile and ol Xaluca Dadesn located in the South of Morocco surrounded by the Erg Chebbi Desert and the High Atlas. The Group’s hotels equipped with every modern convenience allows for expeditions in 4X4,quads or trekking on camels , mules or trekking as well as organizing bivouacs and mountain refuges. The desert provides a unique experience of stillness, landscape and adventure and sun. Mr. Mohammed Said Mrani of Valeur Sud and Ouednoujoum both in Ouarzazate also provides trekking and ecotourism and bivouacs.

Morocco has become a premier golfing destination and one of the leading tourist agencies for this important sector is Dija Tours based in Rabat.

Saturday 17th January saw a spectacular evening reception at the stand of the Domaine de La Rosarie celebrating its 40th Anniversary created by Abdelkader Fenjiro in the heart of Berber country among the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Despite the lack of infrastructure at the time in this rural and secluded environment he  built up in 60 acres some 40 rooms decorated in traditional Moorish style with Berber influences surrounded by rose bushes , wild floors olive trees and fruit orchards with stunning views of the Mount Toubkal range. There are three swimming pools and spa facilities. This is a wonderful retreat and it was a great pleasure to meet the Fenjiro family and congratulate them on this auspicious anniversary amongst the banks of roses on their stand.

Chris McHugo owner of the popular and spectacular Kasbah Toubkal who also now organizes mountain Tours was also much in evidence in the show.

The Kasbah Agafay, member of the small luxury hotels off the World is a visionary conversion of an 18th Century ancient Kasbah 20 minutes drive from Marrakech with wonderful views of the Atlas Mountains with its own herb garden and swimming pool. The energetic   Abel Damoussi and his son Sami who manages the Kasbah Agafay have interesting offers for 2009.

The second edition of the Moroccan Travel Market has been a great success strengthening professional relationships and making us realize yet again what a wonderful tourism destination Morocco is and how dynamic its development continues to be this is surely the way forward in 2009 as is Morocco’s closeness to Africa with all its tourism strengths and adventure. We look forward to the next MTM with eager anticipation.

Congratulations to the organizers, International Fairs and Events.
