WTM and Euromonitor International Global Trends Report 2009
In North America the recession has created a new consumer group, the "funemployed" who are cash poor but time rich and keen to travel. In the UK a new urban concept "pop up hotels" in urban centres provides hotel operators in urban centres with greater cost efficiencies because the hotels are temporary structures which can help in the regeneration of deprived areas. In Asia golf tourism proves that Asians are unwilling to forgo their golfing even in times of recession, even creating a golf fashion craze.

Another development is the creation of women only accommodation, which is up and coming in the Middle East, a culturally sensitive concept that has international appeal and does not apply only to the Middle East and Saudi Arabia. Women travelling on business could also benefit from this new concept.

In Latin America rebranding is the name of the game aiming to increase their luxury credentials while Africa is benefitting from the "Obama Effect" boosting roots tourism.

In Europe the democratisation of luxury travel is moving ahead with the development of concierge travel services to the masses, offering a more personalised service. Virgin and Kuoni offer these services to those with budgets of 20 to 25,000 euros. The services include pre trip planning and organisation and post trip assessment.

Global arrivals are expected by -8 per and -16 per cent for hotels, and airline ticket sales by -14 per cent, far worse than expected. Departure taxes in the UK have been a break on recovery, the Netherlands and other countries have abandoned them.

A new era of austerity has emerged in the face of unemployment and mass public debt. Howeveer the upside to this is that young people with no mortgage or responsibilities are to a certain extent freer to travel on holiday. The threat of swine flu has also decreased the amount of travellers.

Tourists are looking for value for money and many are returning to package holidays. Many hotels are offering as much as 50 per cent discount or are even prepared to drop a star and charge less to stay viable under current circumstances.

In response to a question regarding Morocco from Yacout info one of the experts, Nadia Popova, said: Morocco is an interesting market because of its proximity and the fact that it is not tied to the euro. All countries react differently to the crisis as regards hotel room charges "
